Big Sister Julia and Little Sister Samantha tell us about their incredible journey together so far.
I work as a Project Manager for the IT department of Deloitte. I found out about the program through a friend of mine, Kim D’Silva, who is also involved in the program. I was so inspired by the thought and commitment put into the program by the team at LCEF that I definitely wanted to be involved even if I didn’t get selected as a Big Sister.
Meeting Sam for the first time was hysterical. I had phoned her the night before so I had a good idea what she looked like. She actually spoke to me several times before she worked out who I was! She is an amazingly talented, beautiful girl who just hasn’t realised her full potential yet.
Being involved in the program has been so inspiring. To meet all these professional women who are prepared to give up their time is fantastic. The girls themselves are inspiring with their varied backgrounds and experiences. They make being a part of this program so worthwhile and every time we meet it reminds me of why I want to be involved in this.
I am fortunate to have my company behind me 100%. At first my CIO was the only one that knew about it and he gave me his full support. Now through networking in my firm I have established more support for the foundation and hope that turns into sponsorship from Deloitte and other clients.
Meeting Julia for the first time was interesting. I spoke to her for nearly ten minutes before realising she was my Big Sister. At first I was too shy to speak with her, there was so much pressure for me to like her, but finally I opened up more. I'm happy I did.
My favourite activity so far was going to Luna Park, I got to spend the day with my friends and I got to go on all the rides ( =] ), but I also enjoyed the workshops on friendship and relationships at our last meeting (SkyWalk).
I'm happy to be a Little Sister because I know that someone is looking out for me and cares about me. For once I don't feel like I'm alone, I have people who can relate to the things I've gone through in the past. I can talk as freely as I want and I know I won't be judged.
Having a Big Sister means a lot to me, because I finally have a suitable female role model in my life. I've never had a constant one before. I can talk to her about things my friends won't care about like school, or I can talk about things I seriously believe in.
The thing we do together mostly is talk and drink coffee =].
