Meet our Sisters

AliceBig Sister, Sandra Jensen shares about her journey so far with Little Sister, Alice Allsop.

Bootcamp was to be the beginning of a brand new relationship with someone I did not even know. Understandably, Alice was feeling the same apprehension and nervousness in her lead up to meeting me!

As I spent time with my Little Sister, I learned more about her as we talked together and shared activities.  I watched her reactions to different situations and began to understand a little more about her.  What I saw was an intelligent, strong, articulate person who valued her individuality and her independence whilst needing recognition and acceptance (as we all do!).  There were situations that arose where we had to understand and work through together during Bootcamp, and as we did that, I learned a little more – yet I still felt there were so many gaps.

On the movie night at Bootcamp, Alice knocked on my door and said “I realised today you are really trying to help me so I thought that you may need to know some things about me.”  We sat for an hour and a half together and she just talked, and during that time some of those “gaps” were filled in. It was the beginning of a new step in our relationship and it made the setting of goals and our weekly conversations so much more meaningful. It is not that we have “deep and meaningfuls” every time we talk, but rather that there is an understanding of some of the background issues that can impact on the everyday stuff in her life.

AliceDoing the HSC this year, Alice is in for a challenging time. Her goals have included attendance at her classes and a desire to pass all of her assessments and exams. Yesterday when we spoke, she was so excited that she HAD passed all her subjects so far – including redoing one assessment task she had originally failed. I was SO proud of her! I felt privileged one day when she shared with me her concerns about the safety of a friend, and together we worked through the options and then she acted out on her decisions. It has been an exciting and challenging road for me – but one I am looking forward to continuing.

I think I’m still only at the tip of the iceberg as far as knowing Alice but we have come so far from that first day at Bootcamp.  I told her yesterday that I had been asked to write this. I asked her how SHE thought our relationship was going and my heart warmed as she said “I think it’s going PRETTY GOOD!” I could hear the smile in her voice – I was smiling too!
