The 2008 SISTER2sister Program introduces an exciting segment in our monthly meetings, "Butterfly Wins". The aim is to provide further encouragement and motivation for our Little Sisters to achieve their goals. Last month, a Big Sister along with her Little Sister spent their weekend attending a St Johns First Aid course. Why did the Big Sister do this? Primarily to inspire and motivate her Little Sister to take steps towards achieving her goal of working in childcare. This is what mentoring is all about. Read on and be inspired by other Little Sisters' recent "Butterfly Wins"
Following each monthly workshop session, we have a fifteen minute session to share and cheer the 'Butterfly Wins' that have been achieved since the previous outing. Following the Luna Park outing, we are very proud to report the following "Butterfly Wins" achieved by our Little Sisters:
quitting smoking
getting a full scholarship to university
returning home to live with mum
becoming captain of the state basketball side in school
deciding to work in Africa and help people there
improving diabetic condition by eating better
setting goal of finishing school and traveling with family
being sworn in with entire family of 8 as Australian citizens
achieving 87% in maths, a subject one Little Sister is not confident in
receiving recognition for being the most improved and outstanding student in her class at school
Alison Loudon gives us an insight into her role as Team Leader at Life Changing.
I am glad I have always had a big and Little Sister, some people aren’t so lucky. As a Team Leader with Life Changing Experiences (LCEF) I can share the luck and some laughs.
My role involves supporting 10 Big Sisters who in turn have their own Little Sister. I am on-call for Big Sisters for advice and questions. When I don’t know the answer, I have a network of resources to refer to including a volunteer psychologist.
The first outing in February saw Little and Big Sisters surfing at Collaroy Beach, even rain couldn’t dampen spirits on the day. Information sessions were held on goal setting and body image. Throughout the year, the Little Sisters will review their set goals, during dedicated one on one mentoring time at each outing.
In March we were fortunate to have Lachlan from the Family Self Defence Academy show the Little and Big Sisters some self defence moves. We also had Detective Denise Shibble, from Sydney Central Police, discuss strategies for staying safe. This gave the girls valuable information and the opportunity to ask questions.
The day began with me meeting Little Sisters’ at Wynyard train station. As many Little Sisters live in Sydney’s Western Suburbs, transport to and from monthly events be time consuming. Parents and guardians sometimes travel with Little Sisters on public transport to events. This makes me think how good it would be to have a dedicated bus for LCEF!
In the afternoon, we all headed to Luna Park for some fun. I watched as the Little and Big Sisters screamed and laughed on rides, as they build their relationships and learn more about each other.
