Meet our Sisters

Big Sister, Jennie Avery and her Little Sister, Gaby Hansford share with us their journey together so far on the SISTER2sister Program.

Big Sister, Jennie Avery

Getting to know Gaby has been a real delight – I feel very lucky to have her as my Little Sister!  I think its fair to say that we were both terribly nervous about meeting each other for the first time at Bootcamp.  When we met, Gaby explained to me that her flight from Melbourne to Sydney was the first time anyone in her family had been on a plane.  So one of the first things I learned about Gab is how brave she is!

Since then I’ve discovered that she is a naturally enthusiastic person who is always willing to give new things a try, be it surfing, rollerblading, kayaking, deportment or make up classes. Gaby is always organized and reliable – at Bootcamp she was often the one making sure we had all our things and were in the right place at the right time!

Gaby’s big goal for this year is to become comfortable being herself with other people.  I was fascinated to hear this goal, because "being ourselves" is something many of us struggle with at different times in our lives and without that self-confidence it is very easy to take wrong turns in life.  It has been so exciting watching Gab make so much progress towards her goal in just a few months.  Week by week, I see her confidence growing, she is opening up and making new friends, and other people are responding to the wonderful person that she is on the inside.  For me, it is a real privilege to share this journey with her.

Little Sister, Gaby Hansford

When I first arrived at Butterfly Boot Camp I was nervous, scared and excited all at once because it was the first time I was going to meet my Big Sister Jennie and all the other Little Sisters. Also I didn’t know what to expect. But when I arrived I realized I had nothing to worry about because everyone was so nice, caring, friendly and supportive.

Being with the SISTER2sister Program has helped me a lot and I have learnt so many things already. I’m thankful to have my Big Sister Jennie because she has also helped me to achieve my goal of being myself. I am now more confident and speaking openly with people.

At boot camp I enjoyed all the activities at boot camp, including rock-climbing, archery, canoeing and deportment. It was even more enjoyable to share the experience with all the other Big and Little Sisters.

I have also enjoyed going to the monthly outings and catching up with everyone. So far we have been surfing which I have never done before but found really fun. We have also been rollerblading which I haven’t done since I was little and even though I fell over countless of times, it was still really fun to get back out there and also really funny seeing people trying not to fall over.

The next outing is going to be flying trapeze, which I also never done before but am really excited about because I always wanted to give it a go.

I am looking forward to the rest of the year and getting to know Jennie and all the other sisters better and making great friends with everyone!
