Big Sister, Tania Curley introduces us to her Little Sister and shares about their journey so far.
I remember my first meeting with Adieu at Boot camp - a gorgeous Sudanese girl, sitting on a chair on her own, quiet and unassuming and seemingly shy... little did I know that by the end of the first night she would be up on centre stage, thrashing away to a Kiss song doing a fantastic impersonation of Gene Simmons. I knew from this point that I was fortunate to have been paired with a Little Sister who had such a positive spirit and was willing to give anything a try!
During our meetings over the past 7 months I have learnt so much about Adieu and taken alot away from our experience together. As a refugee to Australia, Adieu has spent the last four years adjusting to Australian life as well as learning English. Her family life requires her to take on adult responsibilities, looking after 5 younger siblings giving her little time to pursue personal interests or study for school. She has also been subject to racism and bullying in a school environment that has resulted in fighting... something I wasn’t aware still existed!
I have been really impressed at the level of maturity Adieu has displayed in overcoming this latter issue, she has taken on board a lot from the program and no longer values what these bullies say and walks away. Most of all though, Adieu has just enjoyed having fun with new experiences, something that any teenager should experience and I personally took for granted in my teenage years. Just last week she said to me that this year has been the most fun she has had in her life and that her parents trust her more to go out and experience things on her own....all thanks to the Big Sister Program.
