The Sydney Harbour Bridge Climb – 20th October 2007
"Reaching New Heights" by Big Sister, Karen Rodrigues
A beautiful day it turned out to be, the weather was perfect – with sunny skies, perfect visibility and pleasant winds as we set out to climb the iconic Sydney coathanger.
After a short hike from Wynyard station, we ate some yummy sandwiches and naughty wedges – a timely precursor to what would quite an energetic afternoon. (For those of you feeling guilty after the wedges, we did burn 650 calories during the climb which is equivalent to 1 hour on the cross trainer)
The rush at the top of the Bridge, whilst looking down at the Opera House and the vast expanse of blue dotted with yachts and boats enjoying the spring weather, was quite amazing! We were overcome with patriotism whilst listening to our guide Elena talking us through the history of the Bridge, the toil and tears (and lives) that went into producing this wonderful structure, that has certainly stood the test of time, particularly when our climb was in its celebrated 75th year! Particularly moving was hearing the story of the labourers who had to balance themselves without any harnesses to fix each hot molten rivet into the structure. To think of them going through the same process to put in the 6 million rivets is just a staggering thought.
Another highlight during the day was to see the raven’s nest on our way down. What a remarkable feat compared to having a nest in an average sized tree! It reinforced to us, that nothing is impossible if you truly set your mind to achieving something, no matter how difficult and sometimes absurd it may seem at the time.
The Climb was very well organised with every detail taken care of – our guides were patient and funny with lots of support along the way, particularly at the scary ladder bit. Whilst our outfits weren’t very flattering, they did the job of keeping us warm and dry when we were up there and contributed to some great photos!
We truly live in a magnificent city filled with beauty and opportunity and it's days like these that remind us of how lucky we really are! Thank you Jess, Vicki and Syd for making this happen and letting us have the climb of our lives!
CD recording session by Little Sister, Maz
"The music recording was my favourite outing because I got the chance to meet Amy Pearson who I really like, and we also got to record our own song. I loved singing with the other girls. I also had some pictures taken with Amy. We also met the singing coach from Australian idol. She was also really nice, and was teaching us how to sing and get the song right. It was hard but also fun. It was a big deal and really exciting for me because I've always wanted to sing and I finally got the chance to record music with the other girls. I was really happy. It was like a dream come true for me.

Annual SISTERS Reunion
We held our second SISTER2sister Program Reunion at the Parramatta Crown Hotel on the 8 December. We enjoyed brunch by candlelight due to the power failure caused by the storms! It was great to see everyone there and to catch up with the progress of all the Little Sisters who attended. Click here to see photos of the reunion.
To all Big and Little Sisters, please keep the office informed of any change of addresses. And don’t forget to diarise the second Saturday every December for the Annual SISTERS Reunion.
