In this issue, we meet Jane Poole and Zarah Bowden. Jane shares with us her journey with her Little Sister so far this year.
Zarah entered the SISTER2sister Program this year having reached a point in her life where she wanted to make changes but didn’t know how to go about it.
She had just completed Year 12 and planned to go to TAFE. Bootcamp in January was a turning point, she realised that "the past does not have to define who she is" and that she is the "driver" of her own life. She was ready to be very open about her life and I spent a lot of time listening and getting an understanding of the issues and influences facing her.
Zarah’s openness and trust has continued to be a strong part of our relationship as we work toward achieving her goals for 2008. Zarah and I are in contact most weeks by email, phone or text and of course attending the monthly outings together.
We are very focussed on what progress Zarah has been making on the goals she set at Bootcamp, and as is inevitable in life when stumbles occur, we focus on what was learnt from the experience, rather than why it was a problem. Prioritisation and breaking goals into ‘bite-size ‘ chunks is an important part of our discussions, as Zarah has a tendency to focus on everything at once and this can easily become overwhelming.
We enjoy celebrating all successes – big and little – and at times I challenge her to move out of her comfort zone. Over the past six months, Zarah’s self-confidence has significantly improved and she is now starting to really trust her own life choices. The positive impact on all areas of her life is really encouraging – we are both really proud of the changes Zarah has made.
