On a beautiful crisp winter’s day on 4 July, Big and Little Sisters gathered at the Abraham Mott Hall in The Rocks for what was a really successful day.
As at all of the SISTER2sister outings, a workshop was held to build on the knowledge and life skills of the Little Sisters, it’s fair to say that keeping up to 50 girls focused can be difficult. Our workshop topic for the outing was Grief and Loss facilitated by Kerrie Kirkwood. It’s such an important yet difficult topic with so much loss in varying forms being experienced by the girls. The session was fantastic with total engagement and everyone commenting on how much they got out of the workshop.
After a beautiful sausage sizzle lunch and the all important one on one time spent between matched Little and Big Sisters where goals and achievements and "life" over the past month are discussed, everyone was ready to be creative. A representative from Newport Galleries ran the afternoon for both Little and Big Sisters – everyone had a canvas each and a huge selection of paints, brushes, foam rollers and anything you might need to create a masterpiece. With everyone lying on the floor on plastic sheets, there was a lot of laughter and shrieking however there was also opportunity for people to reflect on what they had heard and experienced in the Grief and Loss workshop and represent those feelings through their art. It was a really fun afternoon with many people going back to do a second canvas, one of the Big Sisters was overheard saying " This is fantastic, I’m going to go on and do some art classes".
