Melbourne News

The last two outings in Melbourne have been action-packed, with our girls busting their best disco moves at the dance workshop, completing a session on anger management, planning their future careers and experiencing the sights, sounds and smells of Melbourne Zoo!

Our August outing at the Youth Resource Centre started with the anger management session led by Christine. Not only was it an informative morning, all the Sisters (Big and Little!) got the chance to show off their dramatic skills with some role plays.

Lovely, pleasant, always-smiling Connie showed us her dark side as a very aggressive girl in her play. Luckily her niece, Sabrina, showed that Germans are made of strong stuff and managed to stand up to her! Cassie acted out what NOT to do when working in retail, while Chelsea got to hurl a chair across the room. All in the name of the workshop of course!

The lovely Lisa arrived in the afternoon to take us through a ‘So You Think You Can Dance’ extravaganza. And we quickly learnt that even if we thought we could dance, most of us had a lot to learn!

In no time we had a routine down pat and performed our dances in pairs. Stand out performances from Mel and Nicole, and Amy and Whitney, were followed by a sensational solo from Ann-Marie.

September – and the official start of Spring – heralded a stormy day in Melbourne for our career workshop and trip to the zoo.

The careers workshop uncovered some amazing talents in our girls, with potential child care workers, a vet and an army cadet amongst them.

Some of the Big Sisters shared their amazing stories as well. Mel taught us that believing in herself, and not letting anyone tell her she can’t do it, has seen her through 11 different career paths – so far! And Jen, packing in life as a lawyer to teach acrobatics in Bali, is living proof that it’s never too late to follow your dream.

Despite much debate over lunch about whether to risk an outdoor outing given Melbourne’s rainy day, we decided to press on and thankfully the clouds vanished as we reached the zoo.

A beautiful, sunny afternoon followed, with all of us delighting in elephants, lions, butterflies, birds, even snakes. Faye’s very believable impression of an ape and Shannen finally finding her emu were among the many highlights of the day.
