The last two outings have seen us stretch – not just our thinking – but muscles in our bodies we did not know existed!
On August 8 we trundled down to Australasian Beauty College at Broadway where 2 of the female officers from Redfern spoke to the girls about a range of issues – from personal safety to reassuring the girls through their words, and their friendly approach, that they were there as support to them and to the community. Lots of interesting questions and discussions arose. This was followed by a presentation on anger management by Kathryn Hudson.
Then it was time our get our butts into gear (literally) at the Urban Dance Studio with no other than Tiana from So You Think You Can Dance fame – who not only moved our bodies teaching us an energetic hip-hop dance routine, but who moved our hearts and our sights with her inspirational story of determination and the importance of following your dreams. What a great afternoon of fun, laughter, concentration and camaraderie!
September 12 began with a great presentation by one of our psychologists Deb Pamula on healthy vs unhealthy relationships followed by an opportunity for the girls to ask, anonymously, any questions they had regarding sexual issues with Dr Paulette Maroun. The discussions that ensued not only gave the Little Sisters the chance to be given reliable information on this very important topic, but also provided the Big Sisters with an insight into some of the issues faced by these young women.
Our afternoon at Virgin Active Gym provided us with the opportunity to try our hand – and body – at boxing, step and Pilates. Again this provided a wonderful opportunity for the Big and Little Sisters to "get physical" and to challenge themselves to s-t-r-e-c-h and to try new things together.
The last few months have seen many of our Little Sisters engaging more with each other and with other Big Sisters as well as their own. The opportunities provided by Urban Dance Company and Virgin Active, and our speakers who give of their time and expertise so freely for our Big and Little Sisters, are invaluable and SO appreciated.
