Meet Our Sisters

Big Sister, Liz shares her first impressions…

Introducing my beautiful Little Sister, Chenelle.  She is a friendly, kind, resilient young woman who is full of life and passion and loves to try anything new! We first met last August when Chenelle entered the SISTER2sister Program and kicked off our first outing with a creative day of painting canvasses.

Over the past months, we have enjoyed many fun days out together, and spent invaluable time getting to know each other and supporting each other to reach our goals for the year. I have been supporting Chenelle to build her confidence with public speaking, and she has been supporting and encouraging me as I seek to run a half marathon this year.

Butterfly Bootcamp 2010 at Namaroo Conference Centre was a great way to begin the official program for the year. Highlights of Bootcamp for myself and Chenelle included meeting and making great new friends with fellow Little and Big sisters, canoeing – getting very wet, having Sydney FC come to teach us some soccer skills, boxing with fitness trainers from the Institute of Fitness, walking over glass with Kerrie Potharst, putting ourselves out there with all the singing, dancing and dressing up we did and releasing butterflies on the last day.  From Bootcamp, and the soccer session, Chenelle made a goal that she would like to join a soccer team this year to increase her fitness and make new friends.

This program and Bootcamp especially helps you to face and overcome many challenges in your life. For Chenelle, these include speaking in front of people, and singing and dancing in front of an audience.  The culmination of Bootcamp is the graduation night on the last night and Chenelle faced her fears and delivered a beautiful speech in front of all the other Big and Little Sisters and friends and family including her dad.  Words cannot express how proud of her I was!  However this program is not only about Little Sisters facing and overcoming challenges… Big Sisters have to face these also.  Dancing is definitely not my strong point, and we did a lot of it on Bootcamp!  Luckily everyone was supportive and it was all in good fun.  Many of the speakers were also very inspiring and challenged me in making changes to my thought processes, facing my fears, looking toward the future and dreaming big!

Through this coming year, I hope to build a strong and supportive relationship with Chenelle, one that she can use to spread her wings and fly!
