Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths Tutoring
Enhancing Opportunities for Women in Technology At Symantec, we define corporate responsibility as the way in which we operate with full attention to and respect for ethics, the environment, and a commitment to positive social impact. One area we have a strong focus in is education, particularly as it pertains to women and the technology industry. Education receives approximately 50 percent of our philanthropic dollars as it enables us to address several important issues simultaneously. Symantec believes all students should have equal access to a quality education. We also want to encourage more students to pursue careers in math and science, and in particular support women and minorities who are interested in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. Women are under-represented in technical and leadership positions in the technology industry. They currently comprise 27 percent of Symantec's global workforce, and this is consistent with women's representation in the industry as a whole. To increase the number of women in leadership, technical, and sales positions at the company, Symantec has committed to a proactive, deliberative approach to create systemic change. In line with this approach, Symantec has partnered with Life Changing Experiences and the Butterfly Opportunity Program in Australia to offer a maths, science, technology and engineering tutoring program to young women who have graduated from the SISTER2sister Program. Symantec are proud to sponsor this program and even prouder of the girls who have participated to date. We wish all of them every success in their future endeavours, and hope to see some of them in the IT industry in the years to come. |
